I got the chance to spend a few days at the Credit One Charleston Open this past week, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. I was able to catch the last day of qualifying, and the first two and half days of main draw play. Luckily, I avoided the cold and rainy weather that plagued finals weekend.
Overall, I found this tournament enjoyable and will be returning for sure. The setting is very manageable for the newbie tennis fan, but also allows for plenty of activities for the seasoned vet. The grounds are quite small overall, and easy to navigate. There is also a very neat park and trail adjacent to the venue that provided a nice place to walk and see some nature prior to match play. The smaller setting did lead to some crowding at times, especially when some of the bigger names were at specific courts there was just less space for crowds to spread out. However, I never felt overwhelmed by the crowds, and they never prevented me from seeing what I wanted too.
The main stadium did have a neat structure where there really wasn’t a bad seat in the house. I spent most of time in general admission, but I still felt like I was on top of the court and could see and enjoy the matches.
I would highly recommend adding Charleston to your “must visit” tournament list. Not only is the tennis worth it, but the city has plenty of amazing history, restaurants, and sites to make it a fulfilling vacation.
